CBME Upgrade Program - FAQ's

Q: What changes are being implemented in the CBME upgrade?

A: The ceilometers are being upgraded to match the current production design. You will notice improvements in cloud detection and vertical visibility estimates, particularly for ground fog and low level obscurations. The upgrade kit also includes the parts necessary to bring the installation site into compliance with standards for lightning and surge protection of electronic equipment.

Q: When will I receive my ceilometer?

A: Each base will receive their ceilometer according to a Prioritized list of bases provided by the AFWA program management. Mesotech will contact the POC at each base several weeks before that base is scheduled to receive its upgraded ceilometers. You must complete the POC questionnaire before we can ship your ceilometer(s). The target shipment rate is 15 ceilometers per week.

Q: How was the priority list determined?

A: The priority list was based on a number of criteria and determined by AFWA program management.

Q: How long will the install process take?

A: The entire process for one ceilometer, including de-installation and packaging of the old ceilometer and installation of the new ceilometer, should take 2 to 3 hours, depending on conditions. Ceilometers installed at discontinuity sites will take slightly longer than ceilometers installed at primary sites.

Q: What if my base has more than one ceilometer?

A: Each delivered ceilometer kit will include explicit instructions specifying which ceilometer it is to replace. Most bases will swap out all of their ceilometers at once, or in close proximity to one another.

Q: Who do I contact if I have questions?

A: Questions about the installation procedure or the shipping process should be directed to Mesotech at 916-368-2020, or via email at ceilometers@mesotech.com. For questions about the priority schedule, please email AFWA Program Management.
